Srinagar, Aug 16: The Kashmir Committee under the chairmanship of Ram Jethmalani is scheduled to hold talks with the Kashmiri leaders of the Hurriyat Conference and People’s Freedom Party today. Jethmalani will try to convince the Hurriyat to participate in the forthcoming J&K Assembly polls.
Jethmalani, before leaving for Srinagar, said that if the Hurriyat Conference agrees to contest the assembly elections in J&K, the polls could be held under President’s rule. He also said that if Hurriyat refuses to contest the elections, then the Kashmir Committee would put in a request for the postponement of elections. Meanwhile, MoS for External Affairs Omar Abdullah said that elections have been held under the President’s rule only in very rare cases and that it wrong to allege that rigging always takes place under the regime of a particular party.
