7,975 new cases take Maharashtra`s total to 2,75,640; active count at 1,11,801

India`s total COVID-19 cases reached 9,36,181 which includes 3,19,840 active cases, 5,92,032 cured/discharged/migrated cases while the death toll is at 24,309. In the last 24 hours, 29,429 new coronavirus cases and 582 fatalities were reported, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday.

  • Uttar Pradesh: 1,685 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours taking the active count to 14,628. Total recoveries now at 25,743, while the toll is at 1,012.

     

  • Singapore on Wednesday recorded 249 new coronavirus infections, including 16 community and five imported cases, taking the total tally to 46,878, the health ministry said. Of the new 249 cases, 233 are foreign workers living in dormitories, it said. (PTI)

  • Chennai accords sanction to a trial by the Indian Council of Medical Research's Tuberculosis institute to study the efficacy of Bacillus Calmette-Gurin (BCG) vaccine in the elderly to fight against COVID-19, the government said on Wednesday. ICMR had sought Tamil Nadu government's permission to study the efficacy of the BCG vaccine in senior citizens at its National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (NIRT) at Chetpet here, Health Minister C Vijayabaskar said. "The ICMR's tuberculosis institute is set to begin the trial very soon," he said in a statement. (PTI)

  • The Uttar Pradesh government has so far conducted 12,31,939 coronavirus tests, the National Health Mission (NHM) in Uttar Pradesh said on Wednesday. "First six lakh tests in the state took almost four months (Total tests on June 24 were 6,03,390), next 6.28 lakh tests have been conducted over the next 20 days only (12,31,939 today)," the NHM in UP tweeted.   • Around 618 more COVID-19 cases reported from Odisha, the state`s Information and Public Relations Department informed on Wednesday. Odisha`s total COVID-19 count now stands at 14,898 positive cases, including 4,933 active cases and 8,964 recoveries. 3,53,824 tests have been conducted in the state till now. So far, 77 lives have been claimed by the disease in the state. (ANI)

The Union Health Ministry emphasised that India has one of the lowest COVID-19 cases per million population in the world with the country's cases per million population being recorded at 657 while the global average is at 1638.


Also, India’s cases of death per million population is 17.2 while the global average is at 73 making it amongst the lowest in the world. 


The lockdown in containment zones in West Bengal has extended till July 19. A comprehensive town-wide lockdown in areas in and around Kolkata, Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Malda, Coochbehar and Raiganj.
