Two sentenced to 20 years RI in 2013 Chakulia gang rape case

Two persons were sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonment by the district and sessions court in connection with a 2013 gangrape case in East Singhbhum district.

Jamshedpur: Two persons were sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonment by the district and sessions court in connection with a 2013 gangrape case in East Singhbhum district.

District and Sessions Judge I-cum-Special Judge (Women atrocities) Satyaprakash Sinha, who convicted Shashank Sekhar Bera and Swetbahan Bera two days ago, pronounced the quantum of sentence today under amended section 376(D) of IPC, sentencing them to 20 years rigorous imprisonment for raping a married woman in Chakulia in Ghatsila sub-division on the intervening night of February 12 and 13, 2013.

According an FIR lodged in this regard under relevant sections of IPC, the convicts had barged into the house of the victim and raped her in turns when her husband was away, said Public

Prosecutor Vijendra Kumar Prasad.

The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 15,000 each and additional imprisonment of six months in case they failed to pay the fine.

As the amended section 376(D) IPC with a minimum punishment of 20 years rigorous imprisonment in connection with gangrape was implemented on February 3, 2013, Prasad said the section was converted into 376(D) IPC and the quantum of sentence was pronounced accordingly.

It was the first case in the district that awarded the convicts 20 years RI in connection with a gangrape incident.

Prasad said altogether six persons, including the victim, the investigating officer and the doctor, were examined in course of the trial.
