India reported a record daily increase of coronavirus infections over the last 24 hours, with a surge in demands for oxygen supplies and hospital beds making it even worse for the Central and state governments.

The country witnessed 2,61,500 new cases, which took its total caseload to nearly 1.48 crore, second only to the United States. India's COVID-19-related deaths also increased by 1,501 to reach a total of 1,77,150, the Union Health Ministry data showed on Sunday (April 18, 2021) morning.

The COVID-19 test results are also being delayed as a result of rising coronavirus infections. Several states and UTs are suffering because the hospitals and laboratories that have facilities for testing are already preoccupied with COVID-19 patients.

The results are reportedly taking over 2-3 days.
