Launceston: Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting considers himself very lucky to have fullfilled his dream to play for his country and to have had a great cricket career.
He recalls that the desire to represent Australia came to him when he was a 14-year-old making his A grade debut with the Mowbray Cricket Club.
Speaking on the eve of his tribute match back home, Ponting, 39, told news.com.au that he is now able to appreciate the achievement of being given the opportunity to play for Tasmania and then Australia, and then, doing it for almost two decades.
Tonight, the man known as Punter will play in a match at the Aurora Stadium, the scene of some of his most treasured memories.
He thanked the Launceston City Council and the Tasmanian Government for the huge honour.
Ponting is rapt that some of his former Test teammates have committed to the match.
