Johannesburg: A painting of President Jacob Zuma with his genitals exposed has taken Republic of South Africa by storm. The controversial painting by Cape Town artist Brett Murray has drawn flak from Gwede Mantashe, the secretary-general of African National Congress.
“The ANC is convinced that this depiction of Comrade Jacob Zuma is in violation of his human dignity and his privacy as a South African citizen, as a father and husband, as the president of the ANC and the President of the Republic of South Africa,” Mantashe said Tuesday.
Mantashe will head to the Johannesburg High Court to pass an order to the Goodman Gallery to withdraw the painting titled ‘The Spear’ from display.
But the painting in question has been defaced by two men- one white and one black. The two men reportedly managed to enter the gallery, where the painting is on display, with paint cans. Cameras installed at the gallery caught the two men defacing the painting and the entire episode was captured and aired on a news channel.
The white man put a red cross over Zuma’s genitals and one on his face. His accomplice then destroyed the painting black patches.
