New Delhi: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), India has released a series of precautions and safety measures for people to take in case of a cyclone.

Recently, a cyclonic storm was marking the low-pressure area over Lakshadweep and adjoining southeast the Arabian Sea has weakened and now lies as a low-pressure area over Lakshadweep area and adjoining southeast the Arabian Sea off Kerala and Karnataka coast.  

The associated upper air cyclonic circulation now extends upto 1.5 above sea level.

Cyclonic storm can destroy the city, trees, block traffic, disrupt flight traffic and also affect human lives. 

Here's a list of precautions and safety measures to take in case a cyclone hits the city:

Residents should check their house, secure loose tiles by cementing and repair doors and windows where necessary.

Keep a hurricane lantern filled with kerosene, flashlight and enough dry cells and keep them handy.

Store adequate amount of food, medicines and drinking water. Try to keep those foods which can be eaten without cooking or with very little preparation. 

Keep your important documents and valuables in water-proof containers.

Do not panic and be alarmed by rumours. Instead, keep calm and help others to be calm.

Keep your mobile phones charged for emergency use.

Move to relief centres and stay in the shelter as and when you are advised to do so.

You should stay indoors during the heavy rains and allow children to venture into the areas where streams or rivers flow. Do not go out even if the weather suddenly clears during a storm as indicated by a lull in the wind and rain.

The loose and dangling wire from the lamp post should be strictly avoided.

Ensure that the radio is fully serviceable.
