DU admissions: Hindu College to have dedicated Girls hostel, smoother online process, shares Principal Anju Srivastava

Delhi University’s Hindu College is on every student's bucket list of colleges to attend. The institution is bringing up new infrastructural changes to accommodate the growing number of students who wish to experience and learn under its rich legacy.

Hindu College Principal, Dr Anju Srivastava talks to iamin about the same.

What is Hindu College doing to attract students this year?

Every year the college attracts lots of students. We are issuing posters and notices to be put up in places where students would easily find it. Our goal is to make their admission process simpler. We are planning to have more volunteers if there is any confusion with regard to the admission process.

Not a lot of students believe in the online application process since it encountered certain glitches last year. They should believe in the system since we have worked hard to make the admissions paperless and streamline it. One or two glitches does not mean that they will happen again. Both application processes, online as well as offline will be treated at par with each other. There is no advantage for those who will apply online than those who will apply offline later on June 8.

As collection centres are limited in the DU, it is going to be quite an ordeal for those applying offline. But because some people are apprehensive of online exams, we will help them. However, we have to come out of that mindset.

Which is the most sought-after course in Hindu College?

The Bachelors of Commerce (Hons), Economic (Hons), and Sciences. It is very difficult to decide cut-offs for these. We receive more than 1,000 applications for 30-40 seats every year.

What do you want to say to students who get the college but don’t get the course?

Courses play an important role than the College. Initially, many students don’t know which course is more important and what they should do in life. Some even grow to like the subject in a conducive atmosphere.

What is Hindu’s USP?

Along with the rich history of the 160-year-old school, we have decent facilities; a good seminar hall, auditorium, the Parliament system of the student union. Hindu has been one of the pioneers in Model United Nations which was started five years ago. Today, we only conduct it at an international level.

New additions:

With almost 50 percent strength being girls, we are going to open a girl’s hostel which will have close to 100 rooms for girl students in Hindu college. The hostel will be opened in June-July of 2016-17. The university will also have a new academic block which will have classrooms, laboratory for science students with lecture theatres and offices.

What are your expectations from new students?

College attracts high percentages. We wish the new students have the drive to strive and to keep moving forward. We have a few societies in the college, clubs for social causes and there are lots of opportunities for overall growth with general upliftment in personality and grooming which the students can take advantage of.
