London: Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish have expressed fears that their son Zachary will be “stigmatised” for having two gay dads. Following their apprehensions, the pair has also consulted counsellors to seek advice on how to make sure that their 13-month-old son deals with the challenging situation.
“I think he’s going to have a lot of attention thrust upon him,” a leading daily has quoted Furnish as telling a magazine.
“He’s going to be potentially doubly stigmatised because one of his parents is extremely famous and because he comes from two dads.”
The concerned couple has even made a scrapbook, which they will give Zachary when he grows older, to explain his “creation” and birth to a secret surrogate mum in the US.
“We’ve taken advice from counsellors. We’ve also put a whole scrapbook together about his creation, the people who were involved in the process and how the intent was about love.
“We’re going to raise him to be proud of who he is.”
According to a leading daily, the 49-year-old filmmaker described their first year of parenthood as “incredible”.
“We’re going to have challenges, of course we are, but we talked about that before we had him,” he said. We have had the most incredible year with him. I can’t tell you how brilliant this year’s been and how much love he’s brought us,” David added.
The couple became parents to Zachary on Christmas Day 2010 via a surrogate mother.
