Even as the chant of 'Gayle, Gayle, Gayle' reverberates inside the Chinnaswamy Stadium, which is also the West Indies batsman's home ground in the Indian Premier League, the left-handed batsman was asked to return to the dressing room by the fourth umpire.
He picked up the injury while fielding during Sri Lankan innings.
Sri Lanka made 122 for 9 from their allotted 20 overs.
