Padmavati rangoli destroyed; Deepika Padukone seeks Smriti Irani's intervention

Mumbai: A photograph of a man creating a Rangoli inspired by Padmavati poster at a mall in Gujarat had surfaced online recently. Fans were in awe of the creation but haters weren’t pleased it seems. Deepika Padukone took to Twitter on October 18 to share an image of the Rangoli that was destroyed by haters.

It took about 48 hours for the artist to make the rangoli but it reportedly took just a few minutes to destroy it.

The actress who essays the role of Rani Padmini in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial tagged Information and Broadcast Minister Smriti Irani in her tweet and wrote: “absolutely heart breaking to see the recent attack on artist Karan and his artwork!disgusting and appalling to say the least! Who are these people? Who is responsible for their actions? For how long are we going to let this go on? allow them to take law into their own hands & attack our freedom & right to individual expression time & again!?  this has to stop NOW & action must be taken!@smritiirani (sic).”

This is not the first time the film has been attacked. The sets of the film which also stars Shahid Kapoor (as Maharawal Ratan Singh) and Ranveer Singh (as Sultan Alauddin Khilji) were vandalised on a couple of oaccasions by members of the Karni Sena. The group also manhandled filmmaker Bhansali.

Recently, Jai Rajputana Sangh too had threatened to burn theatres if the film was not shown to members of the community before it releases. They wanted to see whether or not the makers had shot any romantic scene between Alauddin Khilji and Rani Padmini.

A couple of weeks back, members of a Rajput outfit, Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha burnt Bhansali's effigy in Meerut. They claimed that the filmmaker had distorted some historical facts and hence they would not allow the film’s release, a leading daily reported.

“It is a well-known fact that Rani Padmavati had died in mass self-immolation and was a symbol of bravery for women. But from what we have got to know, some historical facts have been distorted in the movie. This will not be tolerated,” the report quoted Kuldeep Tomar, district president of Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha as saying.

However, according to a report in Bollywoodlife.com, I&B Minister Smriti Irani had promised Karan Johar during an event held a few days back that Padmavati won’t face problems during the release.
