Was hesitant about 'Hamari Adhuri Kahani': Rajkummar Rao

Having starred in issue-based and feel-good films lately, actor Rajkummar Rao says agreeing to play an abusive husband in his upcoming film ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ was not an easy decision to make.

New Delhi: Having starred in issue-based and feel-good films lately, actor Rajkummar Rao says agreeing to play an abusive husband in his upcoming film ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ was not an easy decision to make.

The 30-year-old National Award-winning actor said the film's writer Mahesh Bhatt, who approached him during the making of ‘CityLights’, had a big hand in convincing him to join the Mohit Suri-directed project.

"My character is not a violent guy, he represents a part of society, where men treat women as their property and want them to be submissive. Bhatt saab told me about this idea while I was doing 'CityLights'.

"Then I read the script. I was a little apprehensive as this is something I have not done before - the maturity level, the understanding of the character was something else. I was not sure if I will be able to pull it off but Bhatt saab kind of convinced me. And then there is Mohit Suri, so I was happy to come on board," Rajkummar said.

‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ also stars Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan and is a love story between their characters.

Rajkummar said his character may not have a hardcore romantic angle in the film but is instrumental in taking the love story forward.

"No story is complete without a conflict. My character is that conflict of the story. The film is a story of three lives, all these three characters are in love and their way of showing it is very different," the actor said.

The film may be based on the love story of Bhatt's parents, but Rajkummar said it is not a biopic and is built on certain incidents.

"Bhatt saab has shared some incidents and memories from his life and the film is not a biopic. The source of the story is their life but it is very different," he said.

‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ will hit theatres this Friday.
