BJP's propaganda is good but hollow from inside: Rahul on Gujarat verdict

NEW DELHI: A day after Congress lost elections in Gujarat and Himachal, party President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the results show that a question has been raised on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's credibility.

"Questions have been raised on Modiji's credibility. His credibility is at stake," Rahul said.

Thanking the people of Gujarat for all the love, he said: "People of Gujarat gave me a lot of love. They taught me that any amount of anger and money cannot defeat love. Gujarat has given the message to Modiji and the BJP that this anger will not help them in any way," Rahul added.

After the verdict on Monday, the Congress President had applauded party workers for fighting the campaigning with dignity. "My Congress brothers and sisters, you have made me very proud. You are different than those you fought because you fought anger with dignity. You have demonstrated to everyone that the Congress’s greatest strength is its decency and courage," he had said.

The BJP fought off a strong challenge from Congress to win the Gujarat polls for the sixth straight time. BJP also wrested power from the Congress in Himachal Pradesh with a close to two-thirds majority.

The twin victories tightened BJP's grip over the country's politics that saw Congress lose one more state with general elections only 18 months away.

BJP took 99 seats in the 182-member assembly, down from 115 it won in 2012, and far lower than the 150-plus seats it had hoped for.

The Congress won 77, up by 16 seats at the end of counting of votes in the Gujarat polls tonight that was marked by acrimonious exchanges and rhetoric during the high octane campaign.
