For a title that generates curiosity ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’ fails to live up to its name. A good film that could have been better, ‘Confessions…’ is a typical Hollywood potboiler that looks into world of a compulsive shopper. Based on a novel by Sophie Kinsella, the film is a ditto copy of the book only that it falls flat on several counts. Spunky, fashionable but lacking the ‘it’ factor to make a hit, the film boasts of some remarkable performances.
For those who have read the book, the film holds no surprises. However, those who haven’t read the novel, here’s a quick look into its storyline.
Rebecca (played by Isha Fisher) is an obsessive spender, who buys the best of labels at throbbing prices. Driven by her passion for luxury, she aims to make it big in the fashion world as that’s the only subject that can hold her attention long enough.
But in a twisted turn of fate, Rebecca lands in a finance magazine. Neck deep in debt owing to her obsession with labels, she is forced to take up the job about a topic she has no clue about.
As lighting strikes, which in this case are a series of unpaid bills, Rebecca decides to get her life back in shape. Determined to change, she swears to get rid of her compulsion to buy labels at outrageous prices, focus and succeed in her job in order to use her experience as a way to get into a fashion magazine. Last but not the least, she also aims to fall in love with her gangly editor Dancy.
Nothing new right? But the flick does have a few genuinely funny scenes and some overtly repeated ones too. Not so original, the film is a mindless comedy.
As for Isha Fisher, she does have that infectious positive energy but at places she tries too hard that totally gives her act away. ‘Sex and the City’ and ‘Devil Wears Parada’ combined; the film hardly brings anything new to the genre.
However, one reason the film should be watched is Hugh Dancy, whose sober act is bound to just sweep girls off their feet.
Lastly, if you’re a girl who shops till she drops? -The film is bound to relate to you; otherwise it’s a sheer waste of time.
So, two cheers for this one!
