Our songs were never gay, says iconic disco group Village People

London: US disco icons Village People have stunned their fans by revealing that there were no gay overtones to their songs.

The 70s disco group was formed to appeal primarily to gay clubbers - and all six band members dressed as gay fantasy figures, a leading daily has reported. Their biggest hit ‘YMCA’ included lines, “They have everything for young men to enjoy, You can hang out with all the boys.” According to the paper, Felipe Rose, the original Native American character, said the group “are just a party band.” And David “Scar” Hodo, the group’s construction worker, said that ‘In The Navy’ song was just about enlisting. “People always talk about the double entendres. There was not one double entendre in the music,” Hodo said. The disco group - which also has a cowboy, a cop, a soldier and a leather-clad biker - sold 100 million records and is still touring, the paper said. ANI
