Washington: Madonna, who planned to build ten schools in Malawi, is being questioned about her motives by the country’s government.
The government has said that the 53-year-old singer did not consult with them over the plans and also claimed that she seemed more concerned with promoting her global image.
Madonna announced her intentions of building the ten schools in January, which would help educate a thousand children at least in the country.
Malawi’s Ministry of Education spokeswoman Lindiwe Chide revealed that the ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ hitmaker did not inform the authorities that she had abandoned plans for a “girls’ academy” due to “mismanagement and cost overruns.”
“Now she decides to announce that she plans to build 10 schools without getting authority from us again... We now feel like this is all about propping up her global image and not in our interest,” Contactmusic quoted Chide as saying.
However, the head of the Global Philanthropy Group, Trevor Nielson, said in a statement issued by Madonna’s New York based spokeswoman: “This is simply not true. The government of Malawi has been fully updated on Madonna’s effort to provide funding for ten schools to be built in communities where there are no schools.”
