Srinagar: Three Army jawans and a civilian were killed when militants opened fire at a security patrol team in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district early on Thursday.

At least five others were also injured in the attack, the police said.

The patrol team was returning from a search operation in Kungoo village when they were attacked.

The forces retaliated but the militants managed to escape under the cover of darkness.

"Reinforcements were immediately rushed to surround the area and track the militants," the police added.

This is the fourth such encounter in three weeks.

The civilian victim is reportedly an elderly woman who died when she was hit by bullets inside her home.

Two officers -- Lt Colonel Mukesh Jha and Major Amardeep Singh - are among the five injured Army personnel, according to PTI.

Search and combing operations are currently underway to flush out the terrorists. Security forces have cordoned off the area.
