Kathmandu, May 29: The 50th anniversary celebration of the scaling of Mt. Everest is being celebrated today. Celebrations begin in Nepal in the presence of Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa’s children.

Amidst the golden jubilee celebrations Sir Edmund Hilary asked the locals what they wanted and they said that they needed schools following which he assured them that something would be done.

May 29 is the date when two courageous men stood on the top of this world, both literally and symbolically. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa reached the summit of Mount Everest on this historical date in 1953. Today after 50 glorious years, world stands together to thank the duo and laud their great achievement.

Recent successful expeditions of Indo-Nepalese Army members, Sibusiso Vilane, the first African to scale it, and new world records on the number of times it has been scaled and the oldest person scaling it, have made the unattainable peak less daunting.

The Mt. Everest will however, be a challenge to all. When asked why he was scaling it Mr. Hilary had said, “… because it is there.” And that will be the answer of all adventurers when they take on the peak.

Celebrations will continue all through the day with all mountaineers saluting the men who truly brought the mountain to Mohammed.
