Yearender 2018: Newbies who made noteworthy big screen debut this year
Much before she made her debut in Bollywood, Janhvi had gained quite a fan following on social media for her fashionable appearance in B-Town parties and events. The pretty girl made headlines every time she shared the frame with her mother (late) Sridevi on Instagram. Janhvi got her first big break with Karan Johar's 'Dhadak', which released this year. The film was the Hindi remake of Marathi hit 'Sairat' and was an instant Box Office success. However, it fetched mixed response from the viewers for being the poor remake of the original and commercialising subjects of honour-killing and caste-based discrimination. Being Sridevi's daughter, expectations were huge from Janhvi. She received mixed reviews for her acting chops. The girl had always expressed of wanting to become an actress, and she has achieved it finally. Post the B.O. success of 'Dhadak', Janhvi has bagged her second meaty project with the same banner.
Shahid Kapoor's half-brother Ishaan Khatter got his recognition with Karan Johar's 'Dhadak' but that wasn't his first film. The 23-year-old lad made his debut with highly-acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi's 'Beyond The Clouds'. Though the film did not mint big bucks at the ticket window, it certainly provided a platform to Ishaan, and he went to sign his first full-fledged role in Karan Johar's 'Dhadak'. 'Dhadak' storyline and plot was criticised but Ishaan was praised for injecting buoyant conviction almost into every scene in the flick. Ishaan has definitely proved himself and his acting prowess. No wonder, he appears as a potential future star of the industry.
Unlike her contemporaries, Sara Ali Khan's debut in Bollywood wasn't a cake walk. Her debut film 'Kedarnath' landed in controversy following a fallout between Abhishek Kapoor and producer Prernaa Arora's KriArj Entertainment. Though the lady managed to bag her second film starring Ranveer Singh, and even before she could rejoice it, she was sent a legal notice by the 'Kedarnath' director who demanded damage of Rs 5 crore for signing another scene before completing her first. However, everything fell in place after daddy Saif Ali Khan came to the rescue of her darling princess. Sara debut film 'Kedarnath' marked her as one of the promising debutants of the year with some tagging her as 'a superstar on the rise'. Her screen presence was so brilliant that in some of the sequences, she even went to give her co-star Sushant a run for his money.
A British-Indian model, Banita Sandhu appeared in several Indian television commercials before she played Shiuli Iyer in Shoojit Sircar's film 'October'. Though she did not have heavy doses of dialogues in the film and her role required her to remain in a coma for the most part in the film, her expressions conveyed everything that the audience wanted to hear. She became a sensation after the film released and gained appreciations for her performance with people tagging her as the 'October' girl. However, despite positive reviews, Banita says she wants to focus on completing her studies in the UK first before she takes up her second project.
Mouni Roy starred in several hit daily soaps and ruled small box for years before she made a rock-solid debut opposite Akshay Kumar in 'Gold' this year. Though the film received mixed reviews, Mouni was lauded for her performance. Before she made her debut in Bollywood, Mouni was signed up for Ayan Mukerji's 'Brahmastra', trilogy, slated for release in 2019. For Mouni, who has been the TV queen, it is no surprise to see that the girl has got a long inning to play in the film industry.
Salman Khan's brother-in-law Aayush Sharma made his debut with 'Loveratri' this year. However, more than his filmi debut, he made a buzz for getting launched by the Khan-Parivaar, who came out showering their support on him. While Salman promoted the film, his mother Salma Khan produced it and Khan brother Arbaaz and Sohail featured in cameo roles. 'Loveratri' also marked the debut of Warina Hussain. Though the film lacked the gripping appeal and planked for its poor screenplay and storyline, both Ayusha and Warina were lauded for their innocent-pleasing presence.
