Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University during his day-long Bihar visit. In Bihar for the day, the Prime Minister visited the ruins of Nalanda. The ruins of Nalanda were declared a UN Heritage Site in 2016. "It’s a very special day for our education sector. At around 10:30 AM today, the new campus of the Nalanda University would be inaugurated at Rajgir. Nalanda has a strong connect with our glorious past. This university will surely go a long way in catering to the educational needs of the youth," said PM Modi earlier today.
Dignitaries Grace The Occasion
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, EAM Dr S Jaishankar, Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar, CM Nitish Kumar, Deputy CMs Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha & other delegates were present during the inauguration of the new campus of Nalanda University.
Destroyed In 1199
Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khalji had destroyed the Nalanda University in 1199 by not only demolishing the structure but also setting it on fire. It's claimed that the fire kept burning for six months as there were lakhs of books in the university.
Deep Historical Significance
The University has a deep connection with history. The original Nalanda University, established around 1600 years ago, is considered to be among the first residential universities in the world.
Inauguration Today
PM Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir today. The Prime Minister also addressed a gathering on the occasion.
Collab Between India, East Asia
The Nalanda university is conceived as a collaboration between India and East Asia Summit (EAS) countries.
Diplomats Of 17 Countries To Attend
The inauguration ceremony of Nalanda University will be attended by several eminent people, including the heads of missions from 17 countries.
2 Academic Blocks, 40 Classrooms
Nalanda University's new campus has two academic blocks with 40 classrooms, with a total seating capacity of around 1900. It has two auditoriums with a capacity of 300 seats each. It has a student hostel with a capacity of around 550 students.
Amphitheatre, Other Facilities
It also has various other facilities, including an international center, an amphitheatre that can accommodate up to 2000 individuals, a faculty club, and a sports complex, among others.
Net Zero Green Campus
The Campus is a 'Net Zero' Green Campus. It is self-sustaining with solar plants, domestic and drinking water treatment plants, a water recycling plant for reusing wastewater, 100 acres of water bodies, and many other environment-friendly facilities.
