Did you know legendary Kishore Kumar was Bappi Lahiri’s uncle? Check their photos

Singer-composer Bappi Lahiri, who is credited for popularising the use of synthesized disco music in Indian cinema, was related to the legendary Indian singer Kishore Kumar. Kumar was Lahiri’s maternal uncle and the latter called him 'mamaji’. Kishore Kumar supported Bappi throughout his career and the two had collaborated and produced superhit songs like ‘Chalte Chalte,’ ‘Inteha Ho Gayi,’ ‘Pag Ghungroo Baandh’ and ‘Taaki O Taaki’.

Not many know that the successful composer-singer Bappi Lahiri also tried out some acting in none other than his uncle Kishore Kumar's film.  Bappi made his acting debut in 1974 in Kishore Kumar-starrer 'Badhti Ka Naam Dadhi'. The movie was produced and directed by Kumar. Apart from him, the film also featured his two brothers, Anoop Kumar and Ashok Kumar. Bappi Lahiri played the character of Bhopu in the film starring his uncles.

 

Kishore Kumar won Filmfare Awards for Best Playback singer for his rendition in 'Pag Ghungroo Baandh' and 'Manzilein Apni Jagah Hain'. The songs from the film were composed by his nephew Bappi Lahiri.

In his long illustrious career, Bappi Lahiri had worked with singers across generations, including Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Alisha Chinai and Usha Uthup. In this photo he can be seen standing in between Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar.

Lata Mangeshkar knew Bappi Lahiri since he was a kid. She sang his first composition in a Bengali film 'Daadu'. She also sang hit songs 'Abhi abhi thi dushmani' and 'Aoa tujhe chaand pe lejaon', both composed by Lahiri.

Bappi Lahiri enjoyed a warm relationship with uncle Kishore Kumar. The two had collaborated on various occasions including ‘Chalte Chalte,’ ‘Inteha Ho Gayi,’ ‘Pag Ghungroo Baandh,' ‘Taaki O Taaki,' 'De De Pyar De', 'Inteha Ho Gayi', and 'Log Kehete Hai' among others. 

Bappi Lahiri was devastated by Kishore Kumar's demise. One day before his death, Kumar was recording for the song 'Guru Guru', composed by Lahiri at the Mehboob Studio. The next day he was no more.  Kishore mama’s death had left Bappi Lahiri devastated. He thought of quitting music direction but then later thought the show must go on.

Bappi Lahiri would often share photos with Kishore Kumar on his Instagram. He would fondly remember his incle and has said that Kishore Kumar is irreplacable.
