Angelina Jolie tells G8 wartime rape preventable

London: Representatives of some of the world’s most powerful nations heard Hollywood star Angelina Jolie address the issue of rape in conflict zones in a meeting that took place in London on April 11, 2013. The actress said that wartime rape was preventable and urged the foreign ministers present at the G8 meet to expedite the process of bringing offenders to justice. Jolie, surrounded by eight ministers and Zainab Hawa Bangura, United Nations’ Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflicts, said, “Hundreds of thousands of women and children have been sexually assaulted, tortured or forced into sexual slavery in the wars of our generation. Today I believe their voices have been heard and that we finally have some hope to offer them. I welcome the long overdue stand that the G8 has taken.” The G8 ministers all joined hands and agreed to further their efforts regarding seeking justice for the victims of rape in conflict zones. “Wartime rape is not inevitable," Jolie added, “This violence can be prevented, and it must be confronted.” The actress, who is a renowned philanthropist too, is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee.
