Combining myth and beehives for fashion

9 designers displayed their creativity at World of Wearable Art awards.

New Delhi, April 18: Mythological tales, electrical wires, mobile phones, beehives, a mathematics mark sheet and even an experience with death - nine budding designers displayed their creativity inspired by all this and more as they prepare to compete at the World of Wearable Art (WOW) awards in New Zealand in September.These young designers from various fashion schools across the country literally wowed the audience with their brilliant creations that were based on different concepts.

One saw models walking the ramp in a boat shaped garment, a dress made of electrical pins with a switch as headgear, an outfit with a dragon`s head and a tortoise`s body and cut-outs of bats and vampires hanging over the head at the New Zealand High Commissioner`s residence here Friday evening. "This is a fashion show with a difference where you have a dazzling display of creativity and very edgy and larger than life designs that bring out the creative best of any designer," New Zealand High Commissioner Rupert Holborow said at the event. Of these nine designers, only three will go to New Zealand and participate in the WOW awards. The names of the selected three would be announced in June. The event is an initiative by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) to promote young talent. FDCI president Sunil Sethi said that such platforms open the eyes of young designers and expose them to international fashion trends. "This association is now four-years-old and our aim is to see Indian designers going places. Such platforms help budding designers to get international exposure and nurture their talent," Sethi said. Apart from the innovative designs, the youngsters had given novel names to their themes as well. `Madam Mathew With Mark Sheet Monster`, `My Lively Experience With Death`, `Let Me Bee`, `Drag d tortoise` and `3D utopia` - the theme names were experimental right from the word go. Students from institutes like the Pearl Academy of Fashion, the National Institute of Design (NID) and the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) took part in the fashion show. IANS
