Live: Maharashtra records 153 coronavirus positive cases so far; 27 people infected in Madhya Pradesh

Months after coronavirus COVID-19 started spreading its deadly tentacles, the global death toll rose to 23,970 and  529,591 were infected as per the data at 06:10 am IST on March 27 according to the Johns Hopkins University.

Months after coronavirus COVID-19 started spreading its deadly tentacles, the global death toll rose to 23,970 and  529,591 infected at 06:10 am IST on March 27 according to the Johns Hopkins University. To discuss the pandemic the powerful G20 held a virtual meeting on March 26, 2020, to chart the way forward and to come up with useful solutions to avoid global economy recession.

The G20 leaders vowed to do whatever it takes to defeat the coronavirus pandemic, protect lives, safeguard jobs and income of millions across the world. The leaders also decided to speed up the efforts to find a vaccine against the deadly virus while strengthening the World Health Organisation (WHO) to ensure that it is able to fight against pandemics.

In India the death toll due to coronavirus COVID-19 rose to 17 and the number of cases surged to 724 with 66 recovered cases and 1 migrant patient as per the Union Health Ministry data. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24 announced a nationwide lockdown for 21 days, in a desperate measure to contain the spread of the virus.

Mumbai records another death due to coronavirus COVID-19 taking death toll to five in state. An 85-year-old person succumbed to the deadly virus. Total number of positive cases in state stands at 153--Mumbai (51), Sangli (24), Pune (18), Pimpri Chinchwad (13), Navi Mumbai (6), Kalyan Dombivili  (6), Thane (5), Nagpur (9), Panvel (2), Yavatmal (4) and Ahmadnagar (3).

A 10-month-old baby tested positive for the coronavirus in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada. He has no history of travel to COVID-19 affected countries and has been isolated at designated hospital. As per the preliminary investigation, the child was taken to Kerala by their family members. The detailed investigation is under process and six primary contacts have been traced and are under house quarantine.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday (March 27, 2020) urged muslims to offer Zuhur prayer at home and avoid going to mosques to ensure social distancing in the wake of coronavirus outbreak in the country. UN Resident Coordinator in India, Renata Dessallien, welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategy for a nation-wide 21‑day lockdown to curtail the spread of the virus. Renata said, ''The UN system in India is fully mobilized and ready to further step up its support to the Government of India to fight COVID-19.'' She added that she believes, if we work together, we can overcome one of the greatest health threats of our lifetime.  UN agencies are working with the Government on preparedness and response measures, disease surveillance, lab and research protocols, risk communications, training on infection prevention and a control and cluster containment plan, as well as surveillance and tracking of travellers.  The UN in India remains active and is determined to deliver for the people they serve, especially the most vulnerable and disadvantaged, who may be among the hardest hit.
