IWPC expresses concern over attacks on journalists

The Indian Women's Press Corps on Tuesday expressed concern over the increasing number of physical and verbal attacks on journalists.

New Delhi: The Indian Women's Press Corps on Tuesday expressed concern over the increasing number of physical and verbal attacks on journalists.

The organisation condemned physical attacks and character assassination of journalists on social media.

"While responsible and ethical journalism should be the norm at all times, the recent remarks of a senior minister, accused of impropriety, about a woman television journalist in the social media, are deeply unfortunate," it said in a statement.

IWPC said several instances have been reported in the recent past including imputations made by individuals in positions of public authority.

"While journalists need to adhere to a code of conduct themselves in the execution of their jobs and refrain from media trials, a similar propriety of language and form is expected of persons occupying elevated positions of authority at all times, more so when they happen to be in government," it said.
