New Delhi: Known for his controversial remarks, BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya on Saturday stoked another controversy when he said that the Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula was not that weak to have committed suicide.
Addressing the media, Vijayvargiya said, “One who protested against the execution of terrorists, one who said that he feels like tearing off Bhagwa whenever he sees one, one who I publicly announced to organise beef party, one who offered namaz for Yakub Memon cannot be a weak youth to have committed suicide.”
Criticising the ongoing protests over Vemula's death, he further added, “Vemula did not blame anyone in his suicide letter. I believe those who are protesting against his suicide are responsible for his death. They are trying to defame PM Modi.”
Rohith was one of the five Dalit research scholars suspended by the university last year after they allegedly attacked a leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarathi Parishad (ABVP).
He committed suicide on January 17, sparking public outrage over the injustice meted out to Dalit students.
