Maharashtra government on Monday said that 175 policemen from the city and suburban police stations were on leave due to various reasons and seven among them declared missing.

Mumbai: Maharashtra government on Monday said that 175 policemen from the city and suburban police stations were on leave due to various reasons and seven among them declared missing.

In a written reply, Home Minister RR Patil informed the the Legislative Council that 175 police were on leave on medical grounds or without permission from the department.

The government had issued orders on December 24, 2010 to enquire into the cases of policemen not reporting to duty.

The police department has initiated measures to hold enquiry against the erring police. In some cases, their leave may be regularised while in some others, they would be punished, he said.

He was replying to a question raised by MLC Sureshdada Deshmukh on missing policemen in Mumbai and suburbs and action taken by the government. He did not elaborate on missing policemen.
