New Delhi, Mar 24: In an attempt to improve financial health of State Electricity Boards (SEBs), the Union cabinet is likely to approve a six-point strategy to bring about reforms in the distribution segment.
The intervention strategy would attempt to remove
deficiencies in the distribution sector which was making many
SEBs non-viable, official sources said, adding this was being
done to attract investments which were presently not
forthcoming because of problems in the distribution sector.

Broad guidelines would be formulated for this purpose for
the SEBs, which is likely to get cabinet nod tomorrow.

The ministry of power has formulated a six-level
intervention strategy to rejuvenate the power sector,
primarily to make it viable and the main efforts is to focus
on reforms in the distribution sector.

The six-level intervention includes interventions at
national level, state level, SEB level, distribution circle
level, feeder and consumer level.

The ministry of power through the Accelerated Power
Development and Reform Programme (APDRP), is making necessary
techno-commercial interventions in 63 identified distribution
circles spread all over the country, in order to upgrade the
distribution network in such a manner so as to achieve the
objectives of reducing transmission and distribution losses to
around 10 to 15 per cent.
