Cong asks govt to appeal against Best Bakery verdict

Gandhinagar, July 03: Opposition Congress in Gujarat today expressed apprehension that the cases of massacres that took place during the post-Godhra riots might go the way of
the verdict in the Best Bakery case ending in the acquittal of the accused and urged the state government to file an appeal against the judgement.

"The verdict has raised a lot of suspicions. Trials in
more gruesome carnages like Naroda Patia, Gulbarg society,
Sardarpura village in Mehsana district and others will
commence in coming days and the acquittal of accused in this
case (Best Bakery case of Vadodara) clearly indicates what
their outcome would be,” leader of opposition Amarsinh
Chaudhary told a press conference here.

"The ruling BJP must appeal against the judgement at
least to uphold its credibility and neutrality," he said
adding, he has also written to Chief Minister Narendra Modi to
file an appeal against the verdict.

A local court in Vadodara had on June 27 acquitted 21
persons accused in the Best Bakery carnage which took place on
March one, last year, after widespread communal violence
rocked the state following Godhra carnage on February 27.

Meanwhile, law minister Ashok Bhatt preferred to remain
tight-lipped about any decision by the state government and
said he has not gone through the copy of the judgement.
