Early clearance of indigenous missiles production by BDL sought

New Delhi, Apr 27: A parliamentary committee has sought early clearance of indigenous missiles production by Bharat Dynamics Ltd, saying undue delay was turning the company into the red.

"One of the reasons for decline in profitability of the company is the delay in clearance for production of indigenous missiles," the Committee on Public Undertakings on BDL said in a report tabled in Parliament recently.

The early nod for the production of developed missiles would enable the defence public sector undertaking to achieve profit targets, the committee headed by BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra said.

The delay has caused considerable damage as the company's rating has come down since 2000-01 and in the absence of the nod to produce missiles BDL undertook manufacturing of pistols and rifles for the home ministry.

The services of the workforce, employed to manufacture developed missiles were not utilised properly, the report said.

The report has also asked the government to soon provide funds for technological upgrade so as to keep pace with the demands of increased accuracy requirements of the modern day weapon system.

"The committee desires that a comprehensive modernisation scheme should be evolved and funded by the government urgently to enable the company to keep pace with the more exacting requirements," it said.
