New Delhi, May 22: Taking note of a complaint sent
by National Commission for minorities on some Sikh NRIs being
denied visas after being allegedly blacklisted by home
ministry for shouting slogans outside Indian Embassies in
1984, National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to
the Centre seeking report into the matter by June 2.
NHRC, in a notice to home secretary N Gopalaswamy, sought
information about various aspects including the total number
of Sikh NRIs who were "blacklisted" by the ministry for the
alleged reasons cited in the reference by the NCM chairman.
The commission also asked the date when the list was
revised and the current status of that list and the possibility
of its expeditious revision, NHRC sources said here today.
NCM had pointing out that certain Sikh NRIs, allegedly
blacklisted by the home ministry for shouting slogans outside
Indian Embassies in 1984 during the golden temple episode,
were being denied visas, even on humanitarian grounds, the
sources said.
