IMD issues 'yellow alert' for Delhi today, predicts heavy rainfall in UP, Haryana, MP

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the national capital on Monday and forecast a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain/thundershowers towards the evening. An orange alert has been issued for Tuesday with the forecast of rain accompanied with gusty winds.

Delhiites experienced a sultry Sunday with the maximum temperature settling at 37.3 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 27.6 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year.

“Light to moderate intensity rain would occur over Nazibabad, Bijnor, Chandpur, Shamli, Rampur, Hastinapur, Deoband, Muzaffarnagar, Khatoli, Saharanpur (U.P), Kurukshetra, Karnal, Panipat (Haryana) and adjoining areas during next 2 hours,” said IMD in a tweet on Monday morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued orange and yellow alerts predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and lightning in Madhya Pradesh. The state has been experiencing intermittent downpours for the last three days. “Both these alerts are valid till Monday morning,” IMD's Bhopal office senior meteorologist P K Saha told PTI.

The ‘orange alert' which asks authorities to be prepared for possible heavy rains and thunderstorms accompanied with lightning at isolated places, has been issued for 23 districts. A yellow alert which advises authorities to “be updated” on the situation, warning likely heavy rains and thunderstorms accompanied with lightning at isolated places, was issued for Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, Balaghat, Anuppur and Narsinghpur districts in the state.

A total of 875 villages in Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Pune were affected by the torrential rains. The incessant rains has triggered landslides in some areas of Maharashtra including the deadliest one at Taliye village in the Raigad district. 

"Given the recurrence of crises, a separate NDRF-style mechanism will be set up in all these concerned districts. The State Disaster Response Force is there but it would be more capable. I will not announce anything right now just to gain popularity, only after a comprehensive review of the flood situation in the state will the compensation be announced, as well as what and how much help can be sought from the Center," said CM Uddhav Thackeray.

Several parts of Kerala in south India also witnessed heavy rainfall with the MeT issuing yellow alert for several districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Ernakulam.

The meteorological department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours at some places in Rajasthan, said an official. Sultry weather conditions persisted in Haryana and Punjab, with maximum temperatures hovering above normal limits at most places. 

Additionally, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls were likely to continue over Gujarat. It also predicted isolated extremely heavy falls over some parts of Gujarat.
