Shabana takes ‘Kaifi Aur Main’ to Azamgarh

Mumbai, Sept 26: Acclaimed actress and social activist Shabana Azmi has taken upon herself to free her hometown Azamgarh of the terror tag, it has recently earned. The actress is going all out to wash the stains that have tarnished the town’s image. And the first step in this direction comes in the form of a famous stage play titled ‘Kaifi Aur Main’ that shall have Shabana and her lyricist husband Javed Akhtar in the lead roles.
The play that has already won acclaim abroad is written by Javed and focuses on the life and career of Shabana’s father - reputed poet and writer Kaifi Azmi.
The play will see Shabana essaying the role of her mother Shaukat and Javed will play Kaifi. The play will be performed by the husband-wife duo in Azamgarh at the end of this month.
Speaking to a news daily, the actress said, “I don’t want to hold a torch for terrorists, but Azamgarh has been a place of heroic intellectual struggles and a nerve centre of communist thinkers. This [the terror tag] is a sad generalization."
The actress also stated that there was much more to the play than just Azamgarh. “The play portrays the relationship between my father and mother. It also shows the cultural diversity of the town."
