‘Delhi 6’ all set to re-release with a new ending

After making a slapdash show at the Box Office, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is all set to re-release Abhishek-Sonam starrer ‘Delhi 6’ with a new tragic ending! The film was originally envisioned with the death of Abhishek’s character in the end. However, director Mehra succumbed to the pressure from his production house, UTV, and unwillingly settled for a happy ending.

Mumbai: After making a slapdash show at the Box Office, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is all set to re-release Abhishek-Sonam starrer ‘Delhi 6’ with a new tragic ending! ‘Delhi 6’ was originally envisioned with the death of Abhishek’s character in the end. However, Mehra succumbed to the pressure from his production house, UTV, and settled for a happy ending. Talking to a news daily, a cast member from the movie said, “Abhishek and Rakeysh had many arguments on the subject. The producers felt that audiences will react adversely to Abhishek’s character dying. Although Rakeysh was unhappy with it, he shot the alternate ending.” Post a year after ‘Delhi 6’ made a drab appearance on the silver screen, the character Roshan dies in the new version of the flick which is all set to be re-released. Confirming the reports of re-releasing ‘Delhi 6, Mehra said, “I made a mistake. I should have gone with my original script with the tragic ending. Going by the reactions I got after I showed the newly edited film at the Venice Film Festival in September, I am sure this is the right version of ‘Delhi 6’.” Incidentally, the newer version overlaps with Mehra’s new project ‘Mirza Sahibaan.’ Talking about the need to start a story bank for his production house, Mehra said, “While there is an acute shortage of writers in our cinema, new writers seem to have no access to the mainstream banners. We want to give these writers a chance to bring their talents to our company.” Meanwhile, Rakeysh will introduce a new director as he added, “I am surprised at the number of new talented writer-directors who are coming to us with wonderful innovative ideas. I want to make these talented filmmakers a part of my team. I can’t make all the films that I want to. These directors can make some of them.”
