Cameron and Weaver join Sting against Brazilian dam project

Filmmaker James Cameron and actress Sigourney Weaver have joined hands with singer Sting in his fight against Brazilian authorities to build a controversial hydro-electric dam in the Amazon rainforest.

London: Filmmaker James Cameron and actress Sigourney Weaver have joined hands with singer Sting in his fight against Brazilian authorities to build a controversial hydro-electric dam in the Amazon rainforest. The 59-year-old singer had claimed that the Belo Monte project, which will be the third largest dam of its kind in the world, will flood large areas of the region resulting in a damaging affect on the Amazon`s indigenous population, as well as destroying the habitat of many rare animals, Daily Star reported.
`Avatar` director Cameron with Weaver has come out in support of the campaign and has urged Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to stop construction on the dam. "I would challenge him to be a hero (by halting work on the project). Huge dams are a 20th century idea in the 21st century: it`s a dinosaur`s idea. (The dam) is going to be an ecological disaster," Cameron said. The duo also helped raise awareness of environmental issues by planting a tree in Sao Paulo`s Ibirapuera Park which marked the first of one million saplings which will be planted in 15 countries worldwide through a partnership between Hollywood studio Twentieth Century Fox and the Earth Day Network.
