Linklater's work on the coming-of-age drama saw stiff competition from Wes Anderson (‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’), Ava Duvernay (‘Selma’), David Fincher (‘Gone Girl’) and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (‘Birdman’).
