Manoviraj Khosla is a pioneer in men’s clothing in India. Having worked for over two decades on impeccable designs, Khosla is known for couture as well as prêt for both men and women. As India organizes its first exclusive Men’s Fashion Week, he tells Shashank Chouhan of Spicezee.com that the idea’s time has come.
Shashank: What are you bringing to India’s first Men’s Fashion Week?
Khosla: I am bringing a brand new collection called Mid Summer Night’s Dream for Spring 2010. You will see the use of a lot of linen in fabrics, texturisation, pin-tucks etc. The theme is showcasing men’s wear from morning to evening to night. Colours range from pastels to beige to my usual orange.
Shashank: This is a first of its kind event in India. What are your expectations?
Khosla: I am very excited and everyone is quite enthusiastic about it. It will be received well, I am sure, and will do well with buyers and media.
Shashank: Are Indian men ready for an event of this scale?
Khosla: They have been ready for quite a while now, actually. It’s a question of exposure to men’s fashion. Events like these create awareness of fashion in society.
Shashank: But it’s all targeted at the high society…
Khosla: Yes it is, but it all trickles down to the man on the street. Fashion weeks around the world are aimed at the higher society but you will see in a few days that the designs on the runway are pretty much everywhere. It becomes street fashion.
Shashank: When we last talked you were worried about the split in the fashion world. Now there is unity with a single spring/summer fashion week for 2010.Khosla: I am very happy and relieved at it. We wanted all the fashion designers to be under a single umbrella. This divide occurred as people with different ideas were not able to stand the ideas of others. We talked about it with each other constantly and there now seems to be a settling down of the commotion.
Shashank: There are reports that F1 and IPL team members will walk the ramp for you …
Khosla: I wanted the F1 team to come, but they have a race this weekend so that’s not going to be possible. Anil Kumble will walk for me and you will have to wait and watch out for what he sports.
Shashank: Male models in India always complain about not being treated at par with female models.
Khosla: I hope this exclusive men’s event will solve the models’ problems. It is a big platform for male models to get more visibility and add value to their portfolios.
