A team of faculty members from SMA is currently in India to visit the IITS and the Indian Institue of Science at Bangalore for possible selection of candidates for the graduate and doctoral programmes at Singapore.

Prof Chua Soo Jin of SMA, heading the delegation, told reporters that an estimated 200 students would be admitted for the programme in the academic year 2001-2002, 50 per cent of them would be local students and the other half from Asian countries, he added.

All selected students would be given maintenance scholarship of $ 1400. Besides, prospective employer companies would offer further fund to students. There would be no tuition fee.
The degree MS and PH D were offerred to students. They were rated equivalent to those offerred by MIT for in-campus students, Prof Jin said. Almost all students were recruited by companies even before the course was over, he added.

Focus would be on building up entrepreneurship of students in the MIT tradition. The subjects offered were advanced materials for micro and nano systems, high performance computation for engineered systems, innovation in manufacturing systems and technology, molecular engineering of biological and chemical systems and computer science.

“The team proposed to visit the regional engineering colleges and the Birla Institue of Technology, Pilani, next year,” Prof Jin said.
