Punjab set for polls, campaign ends in UP, Manipur, Uttaranchal

Punjab is all set to go to polls on Wednesday amid tight security and use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the first time even as din and bustle of campaign ended on Tuesday evening for the first phase of balloting in Uttar Pradesh and Manipur and one-day poll in Uttaranchal on February 14.

Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place in Punjab for holding free and fair polls.

A total of 1.58 crore voters are expected to decide the electoral fate of 918 candidates for 116 constituencies.

About 3,638 polling stations have been identified as "sensitive" among 18,239 stations where the electorate will exercise their franchise with the help of EVMs.

Election to the Malout constituency has been "adjourned" following the death of sitting legislator and ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) nominee Sujan Singh.

Besides Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal (Lambi) and state Congress President Capt Amarinder Singh (Patiala Town) other prominent candidates in the fray include Former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal (Lehra Gaga), former Assembly speaker and Panthic Morcha leader Ravi Inder Singh (Morinda).
