PM Modi to preside over Sri Anandpur Sahib celebrations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will preside over the celebrations to commemorate the 350th foundation day of Sri Anandpur Sahib town in Punjab on June 19, an official statement said on Friday.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will preside over the celebrations to commemorate the 350th foundation day of Sri Anandpur Sahib town in Punjab on June 19, an official statement said on Friday.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal called on Modi at his residence here and invited him to preside over the celebrations and he accepted it, the statement quoting the chief minister said.

It said Badal apprised the prime minister of the history and significance of the holy town of Sri Anandpur Sahib, founded by Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh master, in 1665.

Later, the chief minister called on Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Home Minister Rajnath Singh to extend invitations for attending the function. Both assured him of participation in these celebrations.

Sri Anandpur Sahib is also the birthplace of the Khalsa. In 1699, the tenth Sikh master, Guru Gobind Singh, formed the `Khalsa Panth` (order of the pure) on Baisakhi.

This year, June 19 marks the completion of 350 years of the existence of the holy town.

The state government would commemorate the historic event from June 17-19.
