Nepal earthquake survivors grateful to IAF for rescue

 People evacuated by the Indian Air Force (IAF) from different parts of earthquake-hit Nepal on Monday expressed their happiness at being rescued and narrated their ordeal.

Kathmandu: People evacuated by the Indian Air Force (IAF) from different parts of earthquake-hit Nepal on Monday expressed their happiness at being rescued and narrated their ordeal.

Satish Ambale, who had come to visit Nepal from Bangalore, said that the situation in the Nepal is terrible as there was no food, water, electricity or means of communication available.

"When the massive earthquake struck Nepal, we had nowhere to go...There was no food, water or electricity. Communication lines were down, we could not contact anybody. We will take army`s help to return home," he said.

One of those rescued, who hails from The Netherlands, said that she was fortunate enough to be alive as many of her group could not make it.

"We felt the earth shaking and the guide said that we have to get down. All this rocks and earth started coming down, and our guide didn`t make it... I was hanging there at some place to have the rocks going over me, and then he said we have to come down...I have been so scared and the whole night the earth kept shaking, and the rocks kept coming down," she said.

Meanwhile, Venkat Ram, an elderly man from Bangalore, said that he had never seen anything like this in his life.

"I have never seen anything like this in my life. I was very scared. But I am glad that I am safe now," he said.

The IAF also rescued several people trapped in the hilly regions of Nepal due to the avalanches caused by the earthquake.

Saturday`s earthquake, which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale, resulted in the deaths of over 3800 people in Nepal, while 72 people were killed in India.

The calamity, one of the worst in over 80 years, was followed by 55 aftershocks.
