London: Former League Cup winners Luton Town will return to the Football League after a five year hiatus next season as on Tuesday they were assured of winning promotion from the Conference Premier.
Luton, who won the League Cup in 1988 beating Arsenal and spent 10 years in the top tier of English football from 1982 to 1992, had their promotion confirmed as second-placed Cambridge United were beaten 2-0 by Kidderminster.
Luton, nicknamed `The Hatters`, lead Cambridge -- another former league club -- by 10 points with just three matches remaining. Luton`s average attendance of 7,266 this season is higher than that of all but two sides in League Two and would rank them 10th in League One Luton`s fall from grace was dramatic as they suffered three successive relegations and have languished in non-league football since the 2009-10 season. Their problems were not just confined to on the pitch as they were deducted 10 points in 2007-08 and then a total of 30 points the following season for remaining in administration and making illegal payments to agents.
