Washington: Pakistani officials had given an informal consent to US for drone strikes to kill suspected terrorists in Pakistan`s lawless tribal belt, former spy chief of the country said.

Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, former director of Pakistan`s Inter-Services Intelligence agency said that there was a political understanding about drone strikes between the two countries.

Earlier, a draft copy of the Abbottabad commission`s report, examining Osama`s hideout in Pakistan for nearly a decade, was leaked in Islamabad to al-Jazeera which posted it online.

The Washington Times reports that the U.S. officials had acknowledged the classified drone program for the first time last year. They said that the airstrikes were authorized by the president and were legal under international law.
