Taliban expected to attend Afghan International Conference

The German Government will be hosting the International Afghan Conference, exactly 10 years after staging the first ‘Petersberg Conference’.

Berlin: The Taliban militia is expected to attend an International Conference on the Afghanistan’s political future to be held in Germany next month.

The German Government will be hosting the International Afghan Conference, exactly 10 years after staging the first ‘Petersberg Conference’, which was held after the Taliban regime downfall.

A daily Mitteldeutsche Zeitung quoted Germany’s special envoy to Afghanistan, Michael Steiner, as saying that conference’s organisers did not oppose inviting the Taliban at a meeting, which is scheduled to be held in Bonn from December 5 to 8.
According to the Nation, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle had earlier opened the option of inviting the Taliban militia to the conference.

The meeting to be attended by political representatives from 85 countries will also assess rehabilitation efforts undertaken in the war-stricken Afghanistan.
