Heatwave sweeps Telangana, 66 dead

Hyderabad: A searing heatwave is sweeping across Telangana has already claimed 66 lives even as the Met department has predicted that there would not be much respite in the coming days.

As per the Telangana government, the district-wise death toll is as follows: Nalgonda-2, Khammam -5, Mahabubnagar – 28, Karimnagar-5, Medak-11, Adilabad-4, Nizamabad-7 and Warangal-4.

A newspaper quoting quoted a government official as saying that the actual number of deaths might be much more.

Most of the victims are daily wage earners and agricultural labourers who have no other option than to toil under the scorching sun.

Last year, over 500 people had died due to sunstroke in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
