Congress fields Manorama Sharma as candidate for Rajya Sabha in Uttarakhand

Former Dehradun Mayor Manorama Sharma Dobariyal was on Friday declared by the Congress as its nominee for the only vacant Rajya Sabha seat in Uttarakhand ending the prolonged suspense over the issue.

"The party high command has chosen Manorama Sharma Dobariyal as the candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat going to poll on November 20," PCC president Kishore Upadhyay told.

Manorama is said to be close to chief minister Harish Rawat.

Speculation as to who would be the party's candidate for the Rajya Sabha poll in Uttarakhand was on ever since poll schedule was announced here on November 3.

Former chief minister Vijay Bahuguna's name was also doing the rounds as one of the probables for the seat which fell vacant after former chief minister and BJP leader Bhagat Singh Koshiyari was elected to the Lok Sabha.

The ruling Congress has the numbers in the state assembly with 35 MLAs and the support of seven-member Progressive Democratic Front.

The opposition BJP has 28 members in the 70-member House.

Rajya Sabha election in Uttarakhand is slated for November 20.
