An Afghan fighter jet pilot was killed near Kabul on Saturday when his plane crashed during rehearsals for a military display, an international security force spokesman said.

An Afghan MIG-21 crashed on Saturday morning at 10:20 am (11:20 IST) to the southeast of the city, said Captain Steve Abbott, commander of the international security assistance force at Kabul's airport.
The pilot did not survive this incident.

Abbott said that the pilot had been taking part in rehearsals for a military display to mark the anniversary of the Afghan Mujahedin's 1989 victory over the Soviets.

A parade, which was due to feature a fly-past from the depleted Afghan air force, is scheduled for Sunday in the Afghan capital.
