Syrian Kurdish fighters inch closer to key ''IS-held'' town

Syrian Kurdish fighters, aided by US-led air strikes, have reportedly moved closer to the border of a key town held by the Islamic State (IS) on the Turkish border.

Washington: Syrian Kurdish fighters, aided by US-led air strikes, have reportedly moved closer to the border of a key town held by the Islamic State (IS) on the Turkish border.

Kurdish official Idriss Naasan confirmed the news, saying that Kurds had taken control of Suluk, a few kilometres southwest of Tal Abyad, after the terror group fled from the town, reported Fox News.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said that IS fighters had withdrawn from the town and the Kurds were five kilometres from Tal Abyad.

A victory over Tal Abyad would allow Kurds to cut off a vital route used by jihadists to smuggle foreign fighters.
