Issuing notice to Brajesh Thakur, the prime accused in Bihar's Muzaffarpur shelter home rape cases, the Supreme Court on Thursday asked him why should he not be shifted outside the state for a free and fair investigation into the horrific incident. The apex court bench headed Justice Madan B Lokur observed that Brajesh Thakur is a very influential person who has been obstructing the ongoing investigation and so should be shifted to a jail outside Bihar.
Calling the details mentioned in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) status report in the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape cases a shocking and having "scary details" of how the crimes were committed, the court also came down heavily on the Bihar government. "What are you doing?," the court asked the state which supported the suggestion to shift Thakur outside Bihar.
The court also asked the Bihar government and CBI as to why Chandeshwar Verma, the husband of former social welfare minister Manju Verma who has been accused of having close ties with Thakur, has not been arrested so far.
Manju Verma was forced to resign from the Nitish Kumar government after it was revealed that her husband was in close contact with Thakur and the two had been talking to each other on a regular basis. Thakur, too, had admitted that he used to speak to Chandeshwar about political issues.
The court also made a few observations about the incident in Bihar's Supaul where 35 school girls were beaten up by villagers after the girls objected to lewd comments and protested against sexual harassment by local youngsters. The court observed that crimes against girls and women were increasing and it seems that they were not safe anywhere in the state.
