Mumbai: Akshay Kumar’s Padman which hit theatres on February 9 has minted over Rs 50 crores at the Box Office. The film directed by R Balki also stars Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor.

Trade analyst and movie critic Taran Adarsh took to Twitter Wednesday to share the latest Box Office statistics.

He tweeted: “#PadMan crosses ₹ 50 cr mark... Fri 10.26 cr, Sat 13.68 cr, Sun 16.11 cr, Mon 5.87 cr, Tue 6.12 cr. Total: ₹ 52.04 cr. India biz (sic).”

PadMan is inspired by Tamil Nadu based social activist Arunachalam Muruganantham’s noble endeavour to invent low-cost sanitary pad making machines. The Padma Shri awardee has also been instrumental in spreading awareness about menstrual hygiene in rural India.

Akshay’s wife – Twinkle, who had written about Muruganantham in a story titled The Sanitary Man from the Sacred Land in her second book Legend of Lakshmi Prasad- has jointly produced the film with SPE Films India, KriArj Entertainment, Cape of Good Films and Hope Productions.

During an interview with BBC, Twinkle while talking about menstruation and the taboo attached to it worldwide said that it took her a lot of time to convince Arunachalam to give her his consent for making the film. It was only after repeated requests, the man, who keeps low key, agreed to give his nod.

PadMan was initially slated to release on January 25 but was postponed after the makers of Padmaavat approached Akshay Kumar requesting him to push his film.

With no other big release in the next few weeks, it would be interesting to see how Akshay’s PadMan performs at the Box Office.
